This block strengthens pupils’ written methods for multiplication and division using a clear, step-by-step sequence. Children move from area models to long multiplication for 2-, 3- and 4-digit numbers, then apply and refine short division strategies, including exchanges and remainders.

Across the unit, pupils solve contextual problems, choose efficient strategies and make links between multiplication, division and place value. Each lesson builds accuracy, confidence and reasoning with larger numbers.

  • Divide up to four digits by a 1-digit number using the formal written method of short division and interpret remainders appropriately for the context
  • Solve problems involving multiplication and division, including using their knowledge of factors and multiples, squares and cubes

Our Year 5 multiplication and division resources cover written multiplication, long multiplication, short division and dividing with remainders. Each lesson follows the White Rose small steps and includes worksheets, clear teaching slides and structured activities to support progression.
