Year 5 Maths Autumn Block 1 focuses on place value within 1,000,000. Aligned with the Year 5 National Curriculum and White Rose Maths progression, pupils read, write, represent, compare and order large numbers before developing their understanding of powers of 10 and rounding.
Across the block, pupils work with numbers to 1,000,000, partition large numbers and position them on number lines. They compare and order numbers, round to different degrees of accuracy and read Roman numerals to 1,000.

Our Year 5 place value resources help pupils develop a secure understanding of numbers up to 1,000,000. Pupils explore the value of digits in large numbers and apply their understanding when reading, writing, partitioning, comparing, ordering and rounding numbers.
The block includes Year 5 place value worksheets, teaching slides and activities covering numbers to one million, partitioning, number lines and comparing and ordering large numbers. Pupils also explore powers of 10 and identify how the value of digits changes when working with increasingly large numbers.
Year 5 pupils read Roman numerals to 1,000 and round whole numbers up to 1,000,000 to the nearest 10, 100, 1,000, 10,000 and 100,000. These place value skills support estimation, calculation and number reasoning throughout upper KS2.
