Reception Maths Spring Block 3

Reception Maths – Spring Block 3: 6, 7 and 8

Spring Block 3 introduces Reception pupils to the numbers 6, 7 and 8, with a focus on subitising, doubling and early number composition. These EYFS maths activities support the Early Learning Goals for Number and Numerical Patterns.

About this block

In Spring Block 3 of our EYFS maths scheme of work, pupils develop confidence with the numbers 6, 7 and 8 using hands-on activities, real-life contexts and clear modelling. This block builds on earlier work in the spring term and supports the EYFS Early Learning Goals.

Week 4 focuses on recognising and representing the numbers 6, 7 and 8. Children explore one more, one less, and composition of numbers using five frames, counters and number tracks.

Week 5 introduces even and odd numbers, doubles up to double 4, and combining two groups. Children also develop conceptual subitising skills to deepen their understanding of quantity.

Each lesson includes:

  • Clear and practical EYFS maths lesson plans
  • Animated Reception maths PowerPoints to guide teaching
  • Optional EYFS number worksheets for subitising, number bonds and doubles
  • Ideas for continuous provision and hands-on maths activities

These Reception maths resources are fully aligned with White Rose EYFS Spring planning and designed for structured, progressive teaching. You can revisit Spring Block 2: Mass and Capacity or continue with Spring EYFS maths lessons.

Reception Maths – Spring Block 3: 6, 7 and 8

In Spring Block 3 of our EYFS maths scheme of work, pupils develop a deeper understanding of the numbers 6, 7 and 8. This block builds on earlier number learning and supports the EYFS Early Learning Goals for Number and Numerical Patterns.

In Week 4, children find, represent and compare numbers 6 to 8 using real-life resources, five frames, and number tracks. They explore the concept of one more and one less, and begin to understand number composition through structured activities and visual models.

In Week 5, pupils explore odd and even numbers, double facts (up to double 4), and combining two groups to form a total. They also practise conceptual subitising to 8, helping them to see and understand number patterns without needing to count.

Each lesson includes a detailed EYFS maths plan, animated teaching PowerPoint, and optional Reception maths worksheets that cover number bonds, subitising, and doubling. These resources are ideal for whole-class maths teaching or small group support in the early years.

This block follows on from Spring Block 2: Mass and Capacity and forms part of a progressive and well-sequenced Reception curriculum. Continue your journey with our EYFS Spring maths lessons for structured early number teaching.
