Reception Maths Spring Block 3

Reception Maths – Spring Block 3: 6, 7 and 8

Spring Block 3 supports Reception pupils to develop a deeper understanding of the numbers 6, 7 and 8, with a focus on subitising, doubling and early number composition. Aligned with the White Rose EYFS Spring planning, these lessons support the Early Learning Goals for Number and Numerical Patterns.

With strong foundations as the focus, pupils use visual models and practical resources to represent, compare and explain number structures, building fluency and confidence for later number work.

  • One more and one less
  • Composition of 6, 7 and 8

Week 5 small steps

  • Even and odd
  • Doubles to double 4
  • Combining two groups
  • Conceptual subitising to 8

Early Learning Goals

  • Have a deep understanding of numbers to 10, including the composition of each number
  • Subitise (recognise quantities without counting) up to 5
  • Automatically recall number bonds up to 5 and some number bonds to 10, including double facts

More about Reception Spring Block 3: 6, 7 and 8

In Spring Block 3 of our EYFS maths scheme of work, pupils develop confidence with the numbers 6, 7 and 8 through structured teaching and practical exploration. The block builds on earlier number learning and supports the Early Learning Goals for Number and Numerical Patterns.

In Week 4, pupils represent and compare numbers 6 to 8 using visual models such as five-frames, counters and number tracks. They explore one more and one less and build early understanding of number composition by seeing how each number can be made from parts.

In Week 5, pupils explore odd and even numbers, doubles up to double 4 and combining two groups to make a total. They also practise conceptual subitising to 8, supporting pupils to recognise quantity and pattern without relying on counting.

Each lesson includes a detailed plan, animated teaching slides and optional Reception maths worksheets covering subitising, number bonds and doubles. With strong foundations as the priority, pupils are supported to use accurate mathematical language and explain their thinking as they work.

This block follows on from Spring Block 2: Mass and capacity and forms part of a progressive, well-sequenced Reception curriculum. Continue your journey with our EYFS Spring maths lessons.
