Reception Maths Spring Block 2

Reception Maths – Spring Block 2: Mass and capacity

Spring Block 2: Mass and capacity is part of our EYFS maths scheme of work for Reception. This block supports pupils to develop early measurement understanding by comparing mass and exploring capacity using real objects and practical activities.

Pupils investigate heavier and lighter through hands-on comparison and balance scales, and explore capacity through pouring and measuring with different containers. With strong foundations as the focus, the unit builds accurate mathematical language and supports pupils to explain what they notice and how they know.

This block includes:

  • Clear EYFS maths lesson plans for mass and capacity
  • Engaging teaching slides
  • Hands-on Reception maths activities and challenges
  • Optional worksheets for comparing and balancing mass and capacity

Aligned with the White Rose EYFS small steps, these lessons support the Early Learning Goal for quantity comparison and help pupils build secure understanding through real-world contexts.

Small steps and Early Learning Goals

Week 3 Small Steps:

  • Compare mass
  • Make it balance
  • Explore capacity
  • Compare capacity

Early Learning Goal:

  • Compare quantities up to 10 in different contexts, recognising when one quantity is greater than, less than or the same as the other quantity

More about Reception Spring Block 2: Mass and capacity

In Spring Block 2 of our EYFS maths scheme of work, Reception pupils explore the early concepts of mass and capacity through practical activities. Pupils compare which items are heavier or lighter, and investigate which containers hold more or less, building early measurement understanding in real contexts.

During Week 3, pupils use balance scales and physical comparison to explore mass and balance. They also develop understanding of capacity by exploring full, empty, more and less with a range of containers. With strong foundations as the priority, pupils build mathematical vocabulary and practise explaining their thinking.

This unit includes lesson plans, teaching slides and optional Reception mass and capacity worksheets, all aligned with the White Rose EYFS small steps. It supports the Early Learning Goal by helping pupils compare quantities up to 10 in meaningful, real-world contexts.

Pupils build confidence using mathematical language such as heavier, lighter, balance, more and less, supporting early reasoning and problem-solving. This block follows on from Spring Block 1: Zero to five and leads into future EYFS maths units in a structured and progressive sequence.

If you’re looking for Reception mass and capacity activities or EYFS measure lessons aligned to White Rose, this block gives you a clear next step for Spring.
