Reception Maths Autumn Block 7

Reception maths – Autumn Block 7: Four-sided shapes

Autumn Block 7 introduces Reception pupils to four-sided 2D shapes, including squares and rectangles. Through hands-on exploration, pupils learn to recognise shapes in the environment, describe what they notice and use positional language in meaningful contexts.

This block includes the theme My day and night, linking shape and time-related language to familiar routines. With strong foundations as the focus, pupils build core vocabulary and early geometric understanding through practical tasks and purposeful talk.

Learning focus

  • Identify and name four-sided shapes, including squares and rectangles
  • Spot four-sided shapes in everyday objects and around the setting
  • Use words such as side, corner, square and rectangle to describe shapes
  • Combine shapes to make pictures and patterns
  • Use positional language such as under, next to, between and on top of

Part of Maths Masters

EYFS shape activities for four-sided shapes

This EYFS 2D shape unit helps pupils identify and describe four-sided shapes, including squares and rectangles, through practical investigations and visual exploration. Pupils begin recognising shapes by their sides and corners while developing the mathematical language needed to describe what they notice.

As part of building strong foundations in early maths, pupils explore four-sided shapes in familiar everyday objects such as books, windows and doors. Activities encourage pupils to sort, compare and combine shapes while developing early spatial reasoning and problem-solving skills.

Pupils also practise positional language such as under, next to and on top of, helping them describe position and movement in meaningful classroom and outdoor contexts.

What’s included

  • Structured Reception maths planning and teaching slides
  • Practical EYFS shape investigations and hands-on activities
  • Optional EYFS shape worksheets for consolidation
  • Ideas for continuous provision and real-world shape spotting
  • Teacher guidance, vocabulary prompts and key questions

Aligned with the White Rose EYFS maths progression, this block supports the Early Learning Goals for shape, space and measure while helping pupils build confidence discussing shape and position.
