Reception Maths Autumn Block 3

Autumn Block 3: Measure and Patterns

Explore size, weight and pattern with our full EYFS Measure and Patterns lesson pack for Reception Autumn Block 3. Aligned with the White Rose EYFS maths progression, this unit includes lesson plans, interactive slides, hands-on activities, and practical recording tasks including EYFS measuring and pattern worksheets to support whole-class teaching and continuous provision.

Pupils compare objects by size, mass and capacity, and begin to spot, continue and create simple repeating patterns using everyday materials. Designed to support both adult-led input and child-initiated exploration, these lessons help build language, reasoning and confidence in early maths.

Reception Maths – Autumn Block 3: Measure and Patterns

This EYFS Autumn Block 3 introduces Reception children to early measurement and pattern skills through practical, hands-on maths lessons. Across Weeks 5 and 6, pupils explore comparing size, mass and capacity, then move on to recognising and creating simple repeating patterns. All activities follow the White Rose EYFS maths progression and support the development of key mathematical language, reasoning and sequencing skills.

Week 5: Measure

  • Comparing size: Children use everyday language such as bigger, smaller, longer and shorter to compare different objects.
  • Comparing mass: Using real-world examples, children explore heavier and lighter through practical activities.
  • Comparing capacity: Pupils begin to understand concepts like full, empty, more and less by comparing different containers and volumes.

Week 6: Patterns

  • Identifying patterns: Children spot repeating sequences in colours, shapes, movements and sounds.
  • Continuing patterns: Using hands-on resources, children practise extending simple repeating patterns independently.
  • Creating their own patterns: Pupils experiment with objects, actions and drawings to form their own repeating patterns.

This block supports early comparison, sequencing and problem-solving skills. Alongside play-based learning and continuous provision, it includes optional EYFS measuring worksheets and pattern worksheets to help teachers gather evidence and support understanding in small group or adult-guided sessions.
