Our Nursery maths scheme is designed for children aged 3 and 4 in their pre-school year. It supports nursery practitioners, EYFS teachers and settings looking for a clear, structured approach to early maths, aligned with White Rose small steps and the Early Years Foundation Stage framework.
The scheme builds a strong foundation in early number, helping the children develop confidence in counting, subitising, pattern, shape and measure as they prepare for reception and beyond.
Who is the nursery maths scheme for?
This scheme is ideal for nursery practitioners, EYFS teachers and settings working with children aged 3 and 4, supporting a consistent approach and clear progress across the year.
What does the nursery scheme cover?
The scheme follows a clear progression based on White Rose small steps, covering number, counting, subitising, shape, space and measure. Concepts are revisited and built on over time, helping the children develop secure understanding.
How is the nursery scheme organised?
The scheme is organised into 24 blocks, each planned over two weeks with around three lessons per week. While blocks are grouped into Autumn, Spring and Summer for guidance, they are not fixed to specific terms.
You do not need to start in September. If you are beginning partway through the year, choose the block that best matches your children’s current stage, then continue through the blocks in sequence to ensure clear progression. The scheme is designed so that concepts are revisited and built on over time, supporting the children to develop secure understanding.
What’s included?
Each block fits alongside your nursery routine, combining adult-led teaching with continuous provision opportunities.
Does this link to reception and beyond?
Yes. Our EYFS maths schemes are carefully structured to link nursery to reception and then Year 1, ensuring children build on prior learning without unnecessary repetition.
By following the progression, the children develop a strong foundation in early number and problem solving, preparing them for the Primary Maths National Curriculum.
How do I use the yearly overview?
The yearly overview shows all 24 blocks in order, so you can see how learning builds across the year. Each block is designed to last around two weeks, with approximately three lessons per week.
Download the free Nursery maths yearly overview to see all 24 blocks in sequence. Use it to choose a starting point based on your children’s current stage, then follow the blocks in order to support clear progression.
These Nursery maths resources form part of our complete EYFS maths scheme of work, with structured progression, practical activities and interactive teaching support for Early Years settings.
Our Nursery maths resources support the EYFS by building strong foundations in number, counting, shape and pattern through practical exploration and play-based learning. Each unit is carefully sequenced to help children develop number sense, recognise quantities, explore patterns and begin to compare amounts.
Teachers and practitioners will find a complete set of materials to support early maths teaching, including animated teaching slides, hands-on activities, vocabulary support and guidance for adult interaction. These resources help adults model mathematical language and extend learning during both adult-led sessions and continuous provision.
The Nursery blocks form part of our full EYFS maths scheme, creating a clear progression from Nursery through to Reception maths learning.
Nursery Maths FAQs
The Nursery maths scheme includes 24 blocks that build progressively across the year. Each block is planned over two weeks with around three short lessons per week, making it easy to fit alongside continuous provision.
Yes. Each block can be started at any point in the year so teachers can match the progression to the developmental stage of the children. However, we recommend following the blocks in sequence to ensure full coverage of EYFS early learning goals.
Each Nursery maths unit includes animated teaching slides, differentiated worksheets, practical activity ideas and vocabulary support. These resources help adults introduce early maths concepts clearly while supporting children through hands-on learning.
Yes. The scheme is closely aligned with the White Rose EYFS progression, supporting the development of early maths skills such as subitising, counting, comparing quantities, pattern and spatial reasoning.
Across the Nursery maths scheme, children develop early number sense, counting skills, pattern recognition, shape awareness and spatial reasoning. These foundations help prepare children for Reception maths learning.
