Nursery Maths Scheme – EYFS Maths Planning for Early Number Foundations

Our Nursery maths scheme is designed for the EYFS, giving teachers and practitioners a clear progression through early number, shape, space and measure. The 24 blocks cover the full year and include hands-on activities, planning and differentiated resources that help children develop number sense, subitising, pattern and spatial reasoning.

Each block can be started at any point in the year, so you can match the progression to each child’s developmental stage. Every block is planned over two weeks, with around three lessons per week, making it easy to fit into your nursery timetable alongside continuous provision. We recommend following the blocks in sequence to ensure full coverage of the EYFS early learning goals.

Our Nursery maths resources support the EYFS by building strong foundations in number, counting, shape and pattern through practical exploration and play-based learning. Each unit is carefully sequenced to help children develop number sense, recognise quantities, explore patterns and begin to compare amounts.

Teachers and practitioners will find a complete set of materials to support early maths teaching, including animated teaching slides, hands-on activities, vocabulary support and guidance for adult interaction. These resources help adults model mathematical language and extend learning during both adult-led sessions and continuous provision.

The Nursery blocks form part of our full EYFS maths scheme, creating a clear progression from Nursery through to Reception maths learning.

Nursery Maths FAQs

How is the Nursery maths scheme structured across the year?

The Nursery maths scheme includes 24 blocks that build progressively across the year. Each block is planned over two weeks with around three short lessons per week, making it easy to fit alongside continuous provision.

Can the Nursery maths blocks be started at any point in the year?

Yes. Each block can be started at any point in the year so teachers can match the progression to the developmental stage of the children. However, we recommend following the blocks in sequence to ensure full coverage of EYFS early learning goals.

What resources are included in the Nursery maths scheme?

Each Nursery maths unit includes animated teaching slides, differentiated worksheets, practical activity ideas and vocabulary support. These resources help adults introduce early maths concepts clearly while supporting children through hands-on learning.

Does the Nursery maths scheme follow the White Rose EYFS progression?

Yes. The scheme is closely aligned with the White Rose EYFS progression, supporting the development of early maths skills such as subitising, counting, comparing quantities, pattern and spatial reasoning.

What maths skills do children develop in Nursery?

Across the Nursery maths scheme, children develop early number sense, counting skills, pattern recognition, shape awareness and spatial reasoning. These foundations help prepare children for Reception maths learning.
