Year 5/6 Mixed-Age Geography Scheme

How to use our mixed-age Geography scheme of work.

For schools with mixed age classes, we have adapted the scheme so that the Year 5 and Year 6 blocks can be used on a two-year cycle. In the first year of the cycle, all pupils in Year 5 and 6 will follow the Cycle A blocks of lessons.

In the second year, all pupils in Year 5 and 6 will follow the Cycle B blocks of lessons. This ensures that children do not repeat any of the blocks during KS2.

Mixed-age year 5/6, upper KS2 geography scheme, lessons and resources

The Mrs Mactivity mixed-age Year 5/6 geography scheme of work is thoughtfully designed to meet the needs of schools with mixed-age classes, aligning with the Key Stage 2 national curriculum. It ensures pupils in both year groups build strong geographical knowledge and skills while supporting progression and depth.

This scheme covers engaging topics that inspire curiosity about the world, such as global trade networks, the impact of climate change, and natural and human geography. Lessons are carefully structured to cater for mixed-age settings, with differentiation and adaptable tasks to challenge all learners effectively.

Key features of the scheme include:

  • Clearly mapped progression documents, ensuring coverage and skill development for both year groups.
  • Interactive resources, including slides and maps, to enhance understanding.
  • Knowledge organisers that summarise essential facts for revision and assessment.
  • Practical and enquiry-based activities, encouraging critical thinking and hands-on learning.
  • Opportunities for fieldwork, data collection, and analysis to bring geography to life.

With an easy-to-navigate format, the scheme supports teachers in delivering high-quality lessons while ensuring pupils achieve their full potential.
