Year 4 Geography Block 3

Year 4 Geography – How Can We Plan for the Future? (Settlements and Land Use)

This Year 4 geography unit introduces pupils to settlements and land use, helping them understand how people shape and change places. Aligned with the National Curriculum, pupils develop map skills in KS2, including four-figure grid references, and explore how land is used in different environments.

Across six lessons, this Year 4 geography planning supports pupils in identifying land-use patterns, comparing different settlement types, and understanding how places change over time. Pupils also begin to consider how land can be used more sustainably in the future.

Part of our KS2 geography scheme of work, which was highly commended by the Geographical Association, this unit provides structured geography lesson plans for Year 4 with clear progression in key skills.

More about this Year 4 geography unit

How Can We Plan for the Future? is a structured Year 4 geography unit designed to develop pupils’ understanding of settlements, land use and human geography.

Across the six lessons, pupils explore different settlement types, investigate land-use patterns, and develop map skills in KS2, including the use of four-figure grid references and keys. This KS2 geography planning supports pupils in understanding how places are organised and how land is used in different ways.

Through enquiry, mapping and local fieldwork, pupils examine how land use changes over time and consider how places can be developed in the future. These geography lesson plans for Year 4 support pupils in explaining human geography and making informed decisions about sustainable development.

Each lesson includes clear planning, interactive slides and differentiated resources, alongside a knowledge organiser and simple assessment opportunities to support progression across the unit.
