Year 3/4 Cycle B Block 2

Year 3 and 4 Mixed Age Geography – Mountains, Rivers and the Water Cycle

Explore key physical geography concepts with this Year 3 and 4 mixed age geography block focusing on mountains, rivers and the water cycle. Created for schools teaching combined Year 3 and Year 4 classes, this unit forms part of our wider mixed-age geography scheme of work for Lower KS2.

Pupils investigate how mountains are formed, discover how rivers shape landscapes and learn why the water cycle is essential for life on Earth. The lessons combine map work, geographical enquiry and fieldwork opportunities to help pupils build secure understanding of physical geography.

Part of our Glorious Geography scheme, recognised as Highly Commended by the Geographical Association, this block includes teaching slides, differentiated activities, vocabulary support and practical learning opportunities designed to support progression across mixed-age classrooms.

How to use the Year 3 and 4 mixed-age geography cycle

For schools teaching mixed-age Lower KS2 classes, the Year 3 and Year 4 geography units are organised into a two-year cycle.

In the first year of the cycle, pupils complete the Cycle B geography units. In the second year, pupils move onto the Cycle A blocks. This approach supports progression across Lower KS2 while preventing repetition of topics and lessons.

Schools can teach the units through weekly geography lessons or through blocked geography teaching across alternate half terms, depending on how geography fits within the wider curriculum.

This mixed-age geography block is adapted from our single-age Year 4 geography unit. You can also explore the standard Year 4 mountains, rivers and water cycle geography block to view the original unit outcomes and progression.

Lessons in this block
  • Week 1: Where are the mountains?
  • Week 2: How do people use mountains?
  • Week 3: How are mountains formed?
  • Week 4: What is the water cycle?
  • Week 5: Where do rivers go?
  • Week 6: How do people use rivers? (includes local fieldwork)

What this mixed-age block covers

This Year 3 and 4 mixed age geography block introduces pupils to physical geography processes that shape landscapes and environments. Pupils explore mountain ranges, investigate how rivers flow from source to mouth and learn how the water cycle moves water around the Earth.

The lessons are structured to support mixed-age Lower KS2 teaching through accessible explanations, practical activities and opportunities for deeper geographical thinking. Younger pupils develop confidence using geographical vocabulary and diagrams, while older pupils explain processes and apply knowledge through fieldwork and enquiry tasks.

Key geographical skills developed

  • Locating mountain ranges and major rivers using maps and atlases
  • Understanding how mountains form and influence human activity
  • Following the journey of a river from source to mouth
  • Explaining the stages of the water cycle
  • Applying geographical fieldwork skills within the local area
  • Using geographical vocabulary to describe physical processes accurately

Where this block fits in the cycle

This is the second block in the Cycle B sequence for Year 3 and 4 mixed age geography. It builds on earlier learning about tectonic activity and natural hazards while preparing pupils for more advanced physical geography topics later in KS2.

Flexible geography teaching

The unit can be taught flexibly within different curriculum structures. Many schools choose to teach geography through blocked units across alternate half terms, while others deliver shorter weekly geography lessons throughout the term.

Created by subject specialists and recognised as Highly Commended by the Geographical Association, our Glorious Geography scheme supports progression from EYFS geography through to KS2 geography.
