Year 3/4 Cycle B Block 2

Year 3 and 4 Mixed Age Geography – Mountains, Rivers and the Water Cycle

This Year 3 and 4 geography block explores some of the most important features of our planet, including mountains, rivers and the water cycle. Adapted from our Year 4 single-age unit, the lessons follow a clear two-year rolling cycle so mixed age classes can access high-quality geography without repeating content. Pupils learn how mountains form, how rivers change as they travel, and why water is vital to people and places.

As part of Glorious Geography, recognised as Highly Commended by the Geographical Association, this block includes teaching slides, differentiated activities, vocabulary support and fieldwork ideas to help teachers deliver engaging, well-structured geography lessons in a mixed-age classroom.

How to use our mixed-age Geography scheme of work

For schools with mixed age classes, we have adapted the scheme so that the Year 3 and Year 4 blocks can be used on a two-year cycle. In the first year of the cycle, all pupils in Years 3 and 4 follow the Cycle B blocks of lessons.

In the second year, all pupils in Years 3 and 4 follow the Cycle A blocks of lessons. This prevents repetition and ensures a broad, balanced geography curriculum.

What this mixed-age block covers

This Year 3 and 4 mixed age geography block introduces pupils to physical geography topics that help explain how landscapes are shaped. Pupils locate mountain ranges on maps, study how mountains influence weather and human activity, and investigate the journey of rivers from source to mouth. They also learn about the water cycle and the important role rivers play in farming, transport and energy.

The block is structured to suit mixed age classes, with tasks that give younger pupils access to key ideas and allow older pupils to deepen understanding through explanation, diagram work and simple research. Fieldwork opportunities encourage pupils to apply their knowledge to real places in their local area.

Key skills developed

  • Locating mountain ranges and major rivers on maps and atlases
  • Understanding how mountains form and how people use them
  • Following the course of a river using maps and diagrams
  • Explaining the stages of the water cycle
  • Applying fieldwork skills in the local area
  • Using geographical vocabulary to describe physical processes

Where this block fits in the cycle

This is the second block in the Cycle B sequence for Year 3 and 4 mixed age geography. It follows the natural disasters block taught earlier in the cycle and prepares pupils for further physical geography topics covered in upper KS2.
