Support mixed-age geography teaching with this Year 3 and 4 mixed age geography block exploring climate zones, biomes and vegetation belts. Designed for combined Year 3 and Year 4 classes, this unit forms part of our wider mixed-age geography scheme of work for Lower KS2.
Pupils investigate latitude, longitude, climate zones and biomes while developing geographical enquiry skills, map work and understanding of global environments. The lessons are carefully sequenced to support progression across mixed-age classrooms while avoiding repetition across the two-year cycle.
Glorious Geography has been recognised as Highly Commended by the Geographical Association, giving schools confidence in the quality and progression of the scheme.
This mixed-age geography block forms part of our wider two-year geography cycle for mixed-age primary classes.
For schools teaching mixed-age Lower KS2 classes, the Year 3 and Year 4 geography units are organised into a two-year cycle.
In the first year of the cycle, pupils follow the Cycle A geography blocks. In the second year, pupils move onto the Cycle B units. This structure supports progression across Lower KS2 while ensuring pupils experience a broad and balanced geography curriculum without repeating topics.
The scheme can be taught through weekly geography lessons or through blocked geography teaching across alternate half terms, depending on how geography is organised within your curriculum.
This mixed-age geography block is adapted from our single-age Year 3 geography unit. You can also explore the standard Year 3 climate zones and biomes geography block to view the original unit outcomes and progression.
This Year 3 and 4 mixed age geography block helps pupils explore how the Earth’s climates are organised and why different biomes exist. Through map work, geographical enquiry and discussion, pupils investigate climate zones, vegetation belts and the characteristics of different global environments.
The planning supports progression across mixed-age Lower KS2 classes through structured activities and differentiated tasks. Younger pupils build confidence with key geographical vocabulary and map skills, while older pupils develop deeper understanding through comparison, explanation and research.
This is the second block in the Cycle A sequence for Year 3 and 4 mixed age geography. It builds on pupils’ understanding of place and location while preparing them for later physical and human geography topics taught throughout the wider Lower KS2 cycle.
The unit can be taught flexibly within different curriculum structures. Many schools choose to teach geography through blocked units across alternate half terms, while others deliver shorter weekly geography lessons throughout the term.
Created by subject specialists and recognised as Highly Commended by the Geographical Association, our Glorious Geography scheme supports progression from EYFS geography through to KS2 geography.
