Year 1 geography scheme, lessons, resources

Our Year 1 geography scheme introduces young pupils to key geographical concepts through interactive and engaging lessons. Designed to develop essential skills like map reading, understanding climate zones, and exploring the local area, this scheme provides a solid foundation in geography.

Block 1: Exploring the Local Area and Creating Maps

Pupils learn about the features of their local park and how to identify landmarks using simple maps. Through hands-on activities, pupils will explore their local area, identify key features, and think about how to improve their park.

Block 2: Climate Zones and the World Around Us

Pupils will explore hot and cold places around the world, learning how climate affects the environment. They will compare different climate zones and understand what it’s like to live in both cold and hot climates.

Block 3: Exploring the UK – Countries and Capitals

Pupils will learn about the countries of the UK and their capitals, focusing on Cardiff as an example of a capital city. They will compare their local area to Cardiff and plan a trip using maps and geographical knowledge.
