Welcome to our Geography Scheme of Work, designed to inspire and educate pupils in mixed-age classes, specifically tailored for Years 1 and 2. Aligned with the National Curriculum, this comprehensive programme equips teachers with everything needed to deliver engaging and effective geography lessons that cater to the needs of both age groups.
How to use our mixed-age Geography scheme of work.
For schools with mixed age classes, we have adapted the scheme so that the Year 1 and Year 2 blocks can be used on a two-year cycle.
In the first year of the cycle, all pupils in Year 1 and 2 will follow the Cycle A blocks of lessons.
In the second year, all pupils in Year 1 and 2 will follow the Cycle B blocks of lessons.
This ensures that children do not repeat any of the blocks during KS1.
Our Geography Scheme of Work for mixed-age classes brings the world to life for Year 1 and Year 2 pupils. Combining foundational geographical knowledge with more advanced concepts, the scheme is structured to ensure all students, regardless of age, can engage with and enjoy learning about their environment and the wider world.
– **Exploring the Local Area:** Pupils start by exploring their immediate surroundings, developing an understanding of the local community. Younger pupils focus on recognizing and naming key features, while older pupils begin to compare and analyze these features, learning how they fit into broader geographical contexts.
– **Weather and Seasons:** The scheme then moves on to weather and seasons, where pupils learn about the different types of weather and how they impact our lives. Year 1 pupils might focus on identifying weather patterns and recording daily changes, while Year 2 pupils delve deeper into understanding how weather affects people and the environment in various parts of the world.
– **World Geography:** As the scheme progresses, pupils embark on a journey around the world, exploring continents, oceans, and global landmarks. Year 1 students start with basic map skills and the identification of key continents and oceans, while Year 2 students expand their knowledge by exploring the characteristics of different regions and understanding the cultural and physical diversity of the planet.
– **Full Planning:** Detailed lesson plans that align with the National Curriculum, ensuring coverage of key geographical concepts while catering to the different learning stages within a mixed-age class.
– **Engaging Slides:** Visually appealing and informative slides for every lesson, designed to capture the attention of both Year 1 and Year 2 pupils and aid in understanding complex geographical ideas.
– **Accompanying Resources:** A variety of resources including maps, worksheets, interactive games, and assessment materials, tailored to be accessible and challenging for both younger and older pupils.
– **Flexibility:** Each lesson is designed to be flexible, allowing teachers to adapt content to meet the diverse needs of a mixed-age classroom. Activities can be easily scaled up or down to ensure every pupil is engaged and challenged appropriately.
– **Support for Teachers:** Comprehensive guidance notes and tips are provided to help teachers confidently deliver high-quality geography education in a mixed-age setting, ensuring that all pupils achieve their learning objectives.
